BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

James Graham, born in Dublin, Ireland, moved to New York as a child and later to New Orleans, La. He was marshal of the District Court of the United States for the Eastern District of Louisiana (1863-1864) as well as State Auditor at one time and a notary public.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The earliest item in the collection is a true copy of a deed and mortgage from Raymond Pochelu to Andrew Hero, Jr., notarized by James Graham in 1859 (1860). Duplicates of deposits of money into the U.S. Depositary in New Orleans by Graham, the U.S. Marshal, are also included (1864). The moneys were obtained as a result of sales of ships, tackle, cargo, and accessories which had been condemned as prize of war by admiralty proceedings in the United States District Court during the Civil War. Two envelopes list certificates of deposit subject to the order of the judge of the U.S. Courts in the office of the U.S. Treasurer in New Orleans giving name of case and amount of deposit (1864).

Notarial and business papers include two commissions of Graham and his oath as notary public (1865, 1867), an order of the governor concerning notarial records (May 2, 1865), and a deed of land sold to Graham by the Sheriff of Orleans Parish (1865). Also included are promissory notes of Alfred M. Wellington to Graham (1866), a notarized copy of a deed of exchange between Zacharie Bruen and Andrew Hero, Jr., (1869), cancelled checks of Graham (1871-1872), a statement of balance due in judgment of U.S. Circuit Court in Case v. Graham (ca. 1874), a notarized copy of a letter to Governor William P. Kellogg of Louisiana from W.S. Benedict, Andrew Hero, Jr., John S. Walton, Jno. Clay, Alfred Shaw and Michael Hahn concerning a bond executed by Graham (1874), and a copy of a return in the case Graham v. Tebo (1883).
