BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Samuel McCutchon (1820-1874), sugar planter of Saint Charles Parish, Louisiana, was the son of Capt. Samuel (1773-1840) and Rebecca McCutchon, nee Butler (1782-1844). In 1819, Capt. McCutchon purchased Ormond Plantation from his brother-in-law, Richard Butler (1777-1820). After his death, his sons, Samuel and James W. McCutchon, managed Ormond Plantation. Samuel also worked as a manager (1866-1874) for Young, Toledo and Company of Regalia Estate, a sugar plantation and saw mill near Belize, British Honduras. Samuel and his wife, Adele D'Estrehan, had 4 children.

Another son, Stephen D. McCutchon (1815-1866) operated Oakland Plantation in Plaquemines Parish during the 1850s as S.D. McCutchon & Co.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains two diaries (1838-1842) and a vital register (1832-1862) for Ormond Plantation. The diaries record plantation activities, including planting and cultivating corn, cane, and rice. Also recorded are accounts of the weather, of livestock and equipment, and of the work of slaves, field hands, blacksmiths, carpenters, and laborers cleaning ditches, maintaining a levee, and cutting timber. The later diary contains notes on modern history by Samuel McCutchon, Jr. The vital register records births, deaths, and illnesses of slaves and includes memoranda and notes on the crevasse of 1849 and the Bonnet Carré Crevasse of 1859, listing damage caused by these breaks in the levee.

A diary (1868-1874) for Regalia Estate contains entries detailing the operation and management of the sugar plantation and saw mills. It includes lists of mechanics, lists of Chinese laborers employed, weekly statements and accounts (some with Seven Hills Estate), copies of outgoing business letters, and notes and memoranda on the processing of sugar. Some entries for Ormond plantation (Jan.-July 1869) are included. A record book (1866-1874) of Regalia Estate contains plans of buildings on the estate and diagrams of the distribution of cane fields. The book is accompanied by loose plans.

Loose manuscript items include an inventory and valuation of slaves, stock and farming equipment on Oaklands Plantation, Plaquemines Parish, owned by S. D. McCutchon and Company (1859); bills and receipts for purchases of furniture and household goods, garden tools, seeds, shrubs, clothing, and a carriage; a contract with a gardener (1849); sketches of carriages (undated); and two items documenting McCutchon's service in the Louisiana State Guard at Shreveport (1864). Letters discuss the manufacture of saw mills; the clearing of dredges in Bayou Lafourche near Donaldsonville, Ascension Parish; and machines and processes for refining sugar.

Printed items include a copy of the newspaper, British and Honduras Advertiser (Feb. 22, 1868); broadsides and a pamphlet (1867-1873) concerning sugar processing and the "Concretor," a machine patented by Alfred Fryer for refining sugar; reprints of the British Trade Journal (1871-1873) on sugar manufacturing and machinery; and a monograph by Samuel L. Dana, A Muck Manual for Farmers.

The collection includes copies of letters of Azby Destrehan McCutchon, inspector on the dredge clearing of Bayou Lafourche near Donaldsonville, Ascension Parish, to Captain W. L. Fish, reporting work accomplished on the dredging project. Azby was the second son of Samuel and Adele D'Estrehan McCutchon.
