BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Marshall J. Gasquet, a lawyer from New Orleans, Louisiana, was a member of the firm of Gasquet, Rutherfurd & Putnam, attorneys of law at the Bank of Commerce building in New York City.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Three diaries (1885-1903) record lists of correspondence, charges for postage, appointments, business calls, and telephone calls for the law firm of Gasquet, Rutherfurd & Putnam. Included is a statement of the succession of Eveline G. Marshall (1885-1886). Two notebooks (1888-1895) contain notes on law, memoranda concerning rents and sales of property in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, a list of New Orleans property, and a statement concerning the Finance Committee of the Anti-Lottery State Executive Committee of Louisiana.

Three record books (1897-1906) contain lists of clients' names, entries concerning law cases, and lists of correspondence and postage. Some entries were made by law clerks and a receptionist.

A memorandum requests Mr. Gasquet to call on Mrs. Jefferson Davis as Commissioner of Deeds for the State of Louisiana (1899). A receipt written on law firm stationery is included (1900).

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Volume 1. Diary, March December, 1896.

Entries pertain to office appointments, business calls, and a few personal appointments. A memorandum (1899) stating Mr. Hartridge of Dowe, Murray, and Hartridge requests Mr. Gasquet to call on Mrs. Jefferson Davis as Commissioner of Deeds for the State of Louisiana as well as a receipt (1900) written on law firm stationery were removed from the volume (and placed at Misc.:G).

Volume 2. Diary, February 1898 January 1890.

Entries pertain to office appointments, business calls, and a few personal appointments.

Volume 3. Diary, 1899-1903 with entry for 1885-1886.

List of correspondence (1899) and charges for postage, office appointments and telephone calls (1900-1903) apparently kept by a secretary of telephone operator. Statement (1885-1886) of the succession of Eveline G. Marshall in account with F.J. Gasquet, executor.

Volume 4. Notebook, ca. 1888.

New York address on cover; on flyleaf “Marshall J. Gasquet, 88 Harvard University.” Entries consist of notes on law, memorandum concerning sale of lands in St. Martin Parish, list of New Orleans property, and memorandum concerning rent collections.

Volume 5. Notebook, 1891-1895.

Statement (1891) concerning Finance Committee of the Anti-Lottery State Executive Committee, and notes apparently taken in a law course or for a law brief.

Volume 6. Record Book, 1897.

Records kept by the receptionist of the law firm of Gasquet, Rutherfurd and Servin, gives the names of callers, a list of persons to whom letters were sent, and the amount of postage charged for each letter, and the initials of the person sending the letter.

Volume 7. Record Book, 1902-1906.

Chronological entries concerning law cases as stated in headings of pages, apparently made by a law clerk.

Volume 8. Record Book, 1904-1906.

Containing list of names to whom letters were sent and amount of postage. Francis J. Gasquet, New Orleans, appears frequently.
