BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Max and August Fischer were wholesale and retail dealers in general merchandise in Bayou Sara, West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. At one time, their merchandising business was called Mann, Fischer and Company. The Fischers also operated the Kenmore Plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

One journal and a ledger (1883-1892) contain accounts of wholesale and retail sales to the Grace Episcopal Church in Bayou Sara, and to prominent families in West Feliciana Parish including the Butler, Doherty, Barrow, Wickliffe, Kilbourne, and Percy families. Three journals (1897-1907) and 5 ledgers (1896-1906) document the operation of Kenmore Plantation. Entries include accounts with tenants, cotton factors, and wholesale business firms and list merchandise purchased including hardware, food, shoes, and drugs.

Business papers (1881-1906) consist of letters, receipts, and account statements which reflect the Fischers' plantation and merchandising activities. The collection includes a few business papers (1900-1906) of Dr. W. A. Holloway of Evergreen Plantation, Plaquemine, Iberville Parish.
