BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Harris was a private in Company D of the 19th Louisiana Infantry of the Confederate Army. He lived in Athens, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, with, Rebecca, his wife and several children and had several slaves. He served at Camp Moore, near Tangipahoa, and at Camp Benjamin, near New Orleans. He became ill in 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi. He later served in Alabama and Tennessee (1862-1863) and was in Bolton, Mississippi, near Vicksburg, until he was sent to Chattanooga after the fall of Vicksburg. His illness during the winter of 1863-1864 took him to the home of his mother-in-law in Alabama for several weeks before he was stationed in Dalton, Georgia, in March of 1864. He was killed July 28, 1864, probably in the Battle of Ezra Church, near Atlanta.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Letters describe health, food, clothing, and other aspects of camp life during the Civil War in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. Discussed are Harris' southern patriotism, religion, and the lapsed morals of his fellow soldiers. The letters do not describe his military duties in detail nor do they describe any battles.
