BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

G. W. Giles was a soldier in Company E of the 35th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers. He served near Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of correspondence from G. W. Giles, a Confederate soldier, to his wife in Huntsville, Alabama. Letters comment upon routine matters pertaining to Company E, 35th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers; Federal prisoners of war from Fort Donelson, Tennessee; United States Army deserters near Jackson, Mississippi; prospects for peace; troop movements; life in army camps; wages; and personal matters.
