BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Claiborne J. (called Bobby) Dugas (1898-1989), a native of Paincourtville, La., and well-known Louisiana figure in Democratic politics, was also a leading educator, athlete and journalist, and publisher of the newspaper Donaldsonville Chief. He was a member of LSU Board of Supervisors (1948-1963), secretary of state of the Louisiana Senate twice during the period 1948-1956, state director of registration in 1951 and 1952, and member of the Board of Tax Appeals (1956-1960).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Reminiscences contain stories and commentaries concerning his father, Clay J. Dugas, Huey Long, Earl Long, LSU, Carlos Spaht, and other issues of state and national politics. Also included is a copy of an article from the Sunday Advocate discussing Dugas’ retirement (1979), as well as two letters to Dugas concerning his memoirs (1982, undated).

The scrapbook [on microfilm], compiled by Dugas, contains letters, photographs, newspaper clippings, memoirs, and memorabilia which document six decades of Dugas' activities, associations with prominent persons, service to Louisiana State University and general education in Louisiana, and reflects developments in Louisiana and national public affairs.
