BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Preston C. LeBlanc of Erath, La., was a member of a prominent family of Vermilion Parish, who served as the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Louisiana State Senate. LeBlanc married Floris M. Showers of Gulfport, Miss. in the fall of 1925. Before their marriage, Herbert Hutchins of Hammond, Ind. also courted her.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Papers are comprised of letters written to Floris M. Showers of Gulfport, Miss., by two suitors, Herbert Hutchins of Hammond, Ind., and Preston C. LeBlanc of Erath, La. In their letters, the two young men express affection for Floris and the desire to marry her. Herbert Hutchins also writes at length about his personal activities involving sailing, attending car races and stunt flying (May 9, 1924). He describes an automobile race in Indianapolis, naming the drivers and their cars (June 4, 1923). He recounts his activities as an assistant scoutmaster, as well as the landscape around the Boys Scout camp at Berrien Springs, Ind., situated on the St. Joseph River (Aug. 20, 1923). Other topics he discusses include the political environment in Europe, German politics, the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana (Oct. 20, 1923), prohibition (Dec. 22, 1923), and the death of President Harding (Aug. 4, 1923). He also writes at length about his job at a lead refinery (Dec. 31, 1923-April 6, 1924).

Preston LeBlanc, writing from Erath, La. and the Gulf Coast Military Academy at Gulfport, Miss., mentions his personal activities.

Papers also contain Leblanc’s military draft registration card (1940), his calling card showing him as the sergeant-at-arms of state senate, and a memorial card noting the death of Floris Showers LeBlanc (1969). Additionally, papers include an illustrated postcard of the train station in Lafayette, La. (undated), a colored portrait of Leblanc (undated), photographs of unidentified persons, and an illustrated newspaper page depicting the different characteristics of nurses (April 6, 1924).
