Biographical/Historical Note

The Upton family resided in Iberville Parish and New Orleans, La. Horace Edward Upton (1845-1914), the son of Rufus Allyn and Sarah Theresa Winfree Upton, practiced law in New Orleans. He married Mary Augusta Randolph, "Augusta" (1846-1937), daughter of John Hampden Randolph, a planter who owned several plantations in Louisiana, including Nottoway and Forest Home. Horace and Augusta married at Nottoway, and their first three children, Horace Edward (1876-1948), John Randolph (1878-1936) and Marion Cornelia (1880-1931?) were born there. Their other children were George Hampden (1882-1949), Emily Jane (b. 1885) and Eleanor (b. 1887).

Scope and Content Note

Personal correspondence, writings, notes and documents from the 1840s-1890s reflect the family life of the Uptons. A journal (ca. 1865-67) belonging to Horace E. Upton describes his travels to Europe and studies in Switzerland (ca. 1865-67), where he resided with the family of his Uncle, [Charles?] Horace Upton. A manuscript from the same period, probably also by Horace E. Upton, tells a fictional story of the European travels of a Scotsman in the eighteenth century. Genealogical materials trace the Upton family tree from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, and photographs mostly depict the Upton family in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
