KLSU starts editing audio and video with SAW editing software and abandons reel-to-reel technology

Laura Blereau discusses the technological developments and how they changed KLSU audio production. Laura Blereau Oral History Interview, Mss. 4700.2594, LLMVC, LSU Libraries, Baton Rouge, La.

LAURA BLEREAU: The other development, I guess, would have been the technology. So we moved from reel-to-reel in the production room to SAW. And SAW was this software that you could cut digital video with, and that was a huge transformation. And at first I was like, "Oh I don't know about this." It turned out to be an amazing thing because you can archive things so much easier, it takes up less space. But it was a little weird to chop things up. Because I'm kind of coming at it where at WBRH, also, we were using a reel-to-reel, so I had been kind of invested in that technology. And I felt very confident in my ability to cut the tape and to pattern things in a certain way and . . . You could control things with phasing, and there were all these, like, cool tricks that I felt that I had mastered, you know. It's always kind of fun with production. It's so creative and . . . With the computer it was like anything was possible, but how do you do it? And it was this whole, like, brand new era.
