Martin (“Marty”, “Doc”) Broussard

Martin Broussard’s career as an athletic trainer spanned over forty years at LSU, from 1948 to his semi-retirement in 1993. He continued to serve the Athletic Department as an Assistant to the Athletic Director through 2001, giving him well over fifty years of service to the Athletic Department.

At LSU, Broussard lettered in baseball and track and field in the mid-1940s, and played professional baseball while serving as student trainer for the football team as an undergraduate. He earned a B.S. in 1945, a Master's of Science degree in 1960 and his Doctorate in 1967, all from LSU. He was promoted to full professor in 1970 and taught in the Health and Physical Education Department for over forty years.

As a distinguished colleague in the field of athletic training, Broussard was one of five people to establish the governing body, the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), as well as one of three people to establish the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Trainer's Association. Over the years, he has served on NATA's Board of Directors and the Ethics Committee and was acting President of the SEC Trainer's Association on three occasions. He was a trainer for the Pan American Games in 1955 and the U.S. Olympic team in 1960. In 1963, the Rockne Foundation named him Trainer of the Year. In 1978, Broussard was named to the NATA Hall of Fame.
