Gus Kinchen: Steve Franz, LSU Sports Information.

Gus Kinchen: I played defensive end in college. I played on a unit called the Chinese Bandits. We were a defensive specialty unit. I played just a couple of handfuls of offensive plays when I was in school, but that was my job. One year I was a punter, part-time, only for one year. That was my position.

Scott Purdy: You said that you played end, what kinds of skills does it take to play that position?

Kinchen: A lot more than I had. [laughing] Oh, you've got to be . . . You have to have some quickness. You have to have the ability to stay on your feet and be able to move your feet a lot. You need some upper body strength to handle people. You had to have some good reactions. You had to be able to analyze certain situations, at least in those days you did. We not only had to protect on the run, we had to protect on passes as well, in certain situations. I don't think I did a very good job at my position, but I lettered three years. I had some significant moments in my career. I really thought I was out of position. I really would rather have played offense. This is where I thought my strengths were, but there were some people that, apparently the coaches thought were ahead of me, and so I was put on defense.
