Mandeville, originally from Philadelphia, was a factor in trade with China; his son Henry, Jr. was a lawyer in Natchez, Mississippi. Two other sons, Theodore and Ellwyn, served in the Confederate army. Collection includes personal and business correspondence documenting life in Natchez and New Orleans; the operation of Westwood Plantation (owned by Henry, Jr.) in Louisiana; and Civil War papers of Theodore and Ellwyn. Papers also include letters referring to musical performances in Arkansas, Virginia, Natchez, New Orleans, and Chicago; and materials documenting civilian life in New Orleans in the Civil War. United States Army 77th Colored Infantry Regiment. Records, 1864-1865. 9 items. Location: OS:U. The 77th Infantry Regiment of the United States Colored Troops was organized on April 4, 1864, from the 5th Corps d'Afrique Infantry. Primarily muster rolls for Company H, providing name, rank, where joined and mustered (most enrolled in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Franklin, Louisiana), record of payment, and comments on status such as present, deserted, or dead and cause of death. The record of enlistment, pay received, and clothing issued for Privates James Jones and Anthony Whitaker of the 13th Infantry Corps d'Afrique are also present. Gurley, John W. Papers, 1858-1866. 81 items. Location: U:145. Attorney of New Orleans. Gurley and his wife Rosa were registered as enemies of the United States during the Civil War but were excused after they signed oaths of amnesty. The majority of letters are from Edward G. Stewart, a planter of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Papers of the Civil War period include claims the Gurleys were enemies of the United States, their oaths of allegiance, and letters confirming their loyalty. Pecquet du Bellet de Verton and Kariouk family. Papers, 1856-1991. 1.5 linear ft. Location: 49:14, 98:P, OS:P. French aristocratic family that emigrated from France to Haiti during the early years of the nineteenth century, and later moved to New Orleans. Pierre Paul and Pierre Francois Pecquet married two sisters, and lived in France and Louisiana. Writings are comprised of family histories, correspondence, and regalia of the Pecquet du Bellet de Verton and Kariouk family; and memoirs that detail historical and political events which surrounded the family from 1793-1989. A manuscript fragment of 'Legs joins the cavalry;' and some miscellaneous notes pertaining to Baton Rouge. Autograph letter signed "S" and addressed to "Bro[ther] from a sailor aboard the USS Richmond, Western Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron, stationed at New Orleans, La. The Union sailor describes secessionist sentiment in New Orleans and comments that the city's warehouses are empty or occupied by "contrabands," escaped slaves.
