Navigating the bias danger zone: Evaluating the (in)Efficiency of Linear Sequential Unmasking (LSU-E) as a bias countermeasure
Linear Sequential Unmasking (LSU-E) is a method of managing the flow of information so as to improve decision making and minimize cognitive bias in expert domains. This article examines the specific factors determining the (in)efficiency of LSU-E. Central to this evaluation is the “bias danger zone,” where decisions involve human judgement, complex data near decision thresholds, and strong directional bias. In these situations, LSU-E reduces bias by prioritizing information based on its objectivity, relevance, and biasability. However, research indicates that the sequencing of information, a core component of LSU-E, is not always effective. LSU-E's (in)efficiency depends on whether the experts perceive specific information as exceptionally strong or weak. Overpowering information can dominate a decision regardless of its position in the sequence, whereas weak information may be disregarded even if presented early. As part of a broader “Context Management Toolbox,” LSU-E must be deployed proportionately and with an understanding of these boundary conditions. Recognizing these factors is critical for forensic science to successfully navigate contextual contamination through appropriate and effective countermeasures.
110 years of rice breeding at LSU: realized genetic gains and future optimization
KEY MESSAGE: Strategic resource allocation in breeding programs is key to balancing cost-effectiveness and genetic improvement. This research aimed to understand the critical role of adopting advanced breeding tools and optimizing breeding strategies to ensure the sustainability and success of public breeding programs in meeting future food security challenges. In this context, there are two main objectives: estimate the genetic gains achieved over 110 years in the rice breeding program of Louisiana State University (LSU); evaluate through stochastic simulations the impacts of modern selection tools such as genomic selection (GS) and high-throughput phenotyping (HTP) on future genetic gains. Considering the 110 years, the average increase was 4.55 kg/ha per generation (23 breeding cycles). However, from 1994 to 2018, we observed more substantial trends in genetic gains, particularly for grain yield, which increased by approximately 56.54 kg/ha per year. Based on simulations, integrating GS and HTP demonstrated significant advantages, including shorter breeding cycles, enhanced selection accuracy, and reduced costs. Also, simulation results showed that this approach yielded the highest response to selection (4.68% per year) due to the synergistic effects of combining advanced phenotyping techniques with GS. Finally, we assessed the effects of balancing the number of parents, crosses, and progeny sizes to maximize genetic gains and maintain genetic variability. Variance component analysis indicated that progeny size had the greatest impact on total variance (36%), followed by the number of crosses (23%) and the number of parents (3.4%). The findings highlight the need for strategic resource allocation in breeding programs to balance cost-effectiveness and genetic improvement.
A practical tool for information management in forensic decisions: Using Linear Sequential Unmasking-Expanded (LSU-E) in casework
Forensic analysts often receive information from a multitude of sources. Empirical work clearly demonstrates that biasing information can affect analysts' decisions, and that the order in which task-relevant information is received impacts human cognition and decision-making. Linear Sequential Unmasking (LSU; Dror et al., 2015) and LSU-Expanded (LSU-E; Dror & Kukucka, 2021) are examples of research-based procedural frameworks to guide laboratories' and analysts' consideration and evaluation of case information. These frameworks identify parameters—such as objectivity, relevance, and biasing power—to prioritize and optimally sequence information for forensic analyses. Moreover, the LSU-E framework can be practically incorporated into any forensic discipline to improve decision quality by increasing the repeatability, reproducibility, and transparency of forensic analysts’ decisions, as well as reduce bias. Future implementation of LSU and LSU-E in actual forensic casework can be facilitated by concrete guidance. We present here a practical worksheet designed to bridge the gap between research and practice by facilitating the implementation of LSU-E.

Does the library hold popular fiction books?
The library does buy some popular fiction books, usually those deemed "essential" by GOBI, has won a prestigious prize, or is highly praised by the Times Literary Supplement or the NYT. Because we are an academic library, the books are shelved according to the Library of Congress classifcation scheme, meaning there is no one section for popular fiction books. Who can advertise on LSU Libraries digital screens, and what are the requirements?
LSU departments and units wishing to promote university events and services may submit slides to be posted on Libraries digital screens. LSU Libraries Digital Screens Dimensions: 1080x1920 and 1920x1080 Guidelines for Submitting a Slide Only LSU departments or units can submit slides for the digital screens. Slides may not be submitted by a: - Faculty member (unless on behalf of a department or unit) - Staff member (unless on behalf of department or unit) - Student (unless on behalf of department or unit) - Student Organization - Sorority or Fraternity - Any group or organization not affiliated with LSU - Businesses Slides must be for official university events and services. All slides must contain the name of the department or unit responsible for the event or service and the ad design must adhere to LSU branding policies. Slides will run for up to two weeks at a time, beginning and ending on weekdays only. Units may request to have no more than two concurrent slides running at any given time. In more can be accommodated, preference will be given to requests submitted first. Submitting a Slide Please submit requests at least five days before you want the slide to be posted. Our PrepSTEP (https://libezp.lib.lsu.edu/login?url=http://www.learningexpresslibrary3…) (formerly known as Learning Express Library) database is probably our best resource for this, though you may want to check with the agencies to ensure the materials are up to date. These materials are generally under the career preparation section on the PrepSTEP homepage. Are there restrictions on photography and filming inside the LSU Main Library?
While LSUs primary mission is education, LSU Libraries is available on a limited basis for other projects such as the filming of television shows, movies, commercials, and other media as long as it does not interfere with the Libraries primary educational mission and necessary day to day functions. LSU Libraries requires that all photography and/or filming taking place in LSU Library or Hill Memorial Library first adhere to the Film and Video Procedures policy (https://www.lsu.edu/administration/ofa/docs/FilmProceduresWebsite2017.p…) set down by LSUs Office of Finance and Administration.
