Morphology, toxin composition and LSU rDNA phylogeny of Alexandrium minutum (Dinophyceae) from Denmark, with some morphological observations on other European strains
The morphology of Alexandrium minutum Halim from Denmark was studied and compared to the morphology of material from Portugal, Spain, France and Ireland. Strains from Denmark and the French coast of the English Channel differed from the typical minutum morphotype by the absence of a ventral pore. Cells without a pore also dominated field material from Ireland but a small fraction (6%) did have a pore. Many cells had a heavily areolated theca. In the exponential growth phase, the PSP-toxin profile of the Danish strain of A. minutum was dominated by C1 and C2 (up to 70%), whereas GTX2 and 3 made up more than 17%, and STX almost 13%. Cells entering the stationary phase contained 30% STX with a concomitant decrease of the other toxins. Partial large subunit rDNA sequences (664 bp) confirmed that the Danish A. minutum strain clusters together with other European strains of this species, and a strain from Australia. However, sequencing of this part of the gene did not resolve intraspecific relationships and could not differentiate populations with or without pore and/ or different toxin signatures. A strain from New Zealand had a remarkably high sequence divergence (up to 6%) compared to the other strains of A. minutum and its identity should be further investigated. A distribution map of A. minutum has been compiled and it is suggested that A. minutum and A. angustitabulatum Taylor are conspecific.
Genetic variability of Myxobolus nagaraensis (Bivalvulida: Myxobolidae) infecting freshwater gobies Rhinogobius Gill 1859 (Gobiiformes: Oxudercidae) from rivers in Japan
Myxobolus nagaraensis is a myxozoan parasite first reported in freshwater gobies (Rhinogobius spp.) from the Nagara River, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Myxospores of M. nagaraensis form plasmodia in the visceral cavities of gobies, commonly presenting as distended abdomens. Although Rhinogobius is a common fish genus in Japan, details of M. nagaraensis, including genetic information, remain unknown. We compared the nucleotide sequences of the ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) of M. nagaraensis from three different host species (R. fluviatilis, R. nagoyae, and R. similis) caught in three different rivers in Japan (Sakai, Sagami, and Kaname). The ITS region (ITS-1, 5.8S rDNA, and ITS-2) and large subunit (LSU) rDNA exhibited 49 and 55 variable sites, respectively. The highest nucleotide diversity was observed in the ITS region (0.00962), whereas that of the LSU rDNA was 0.00187. Differences in host species, rather than rivers, were a significant factor for genetic variation in both the ITS region (62.58%; P

Who has access to online library databases?
Due to licensing restrictions, off-campus access to databases is generally reserved only for current LSU faculty, staff, and students. On-campus access should be available to anyone connected to the LSU Wireless network. Because public patrons do not have access to LSU Wi-Fi, LSU Library houses a few public access computers in room 241. Non-affiliates and public patrons who are able to visit in person will have full access to databases using these computers. We also have a list of open access databases that should be accessible to everyone from anywhere (see below). The online library catalog is also open to everyone. How can I renew my checkouts?
There are three different ways you can renew items checked out from LSU Library: - In-person: Bring your items to the checkout desk in room 241 of LSU Library. Be sure to bring your TigerCard or public patron ID. - Online: Certain items are eligible for online renewal. Log into your online library account (link below) and select the "Checkouts" tab. - Self-checkout: Certain items can be renewed using the self-checkout station in room 141 of LSU Library. Be sure to bring your TigerCard or public patron ID. Some laptops are eligible for one online renewal. Once the online renewal has been used, patrons will need to bring the laptop, bag, and charger back to the library in person. At that point, the library may be able to reissue the laptop if certain conditions are met. Why does my library account say that I am blocked, that I am barred, or that my status is expired?
Users can encounter several different types of status messages. Patrons with questions about their account status can visit the checkout desk in room 241 of LSU Library and ask to speak to a staff member. Alternatively, patrons can reach out to us via e-mail at libcirc@lsu.edu (mailto:libcirc@lsu.edu) . When contacting us via e-mail, LSU students, staff, and faculty should message us from their LSU e-mail address; public patrons should message us from the e-mail address we have on file. For privacy reasons, we cannot discuss the details of patron accounts over the telephone. Expired: Students must be currently enrolled in classes in order to be granted library privileges. Once they graduate, or if they fail to register on time in accord with the deadlines posted on LSUs academic calendar, their privileges expire. If they try to log in to their library account after that date, they will see an alert message informing them that their account has expired. Graduate students who have received a masters degree but are continuing on to get their PhD may also have their privileges expire earlier than expected. The library receives weekly updates on student status from the Registrars Office. Once the semester has begun, if students register during the week, their accounts will not be updated and their privileges extended in the system until the following Monday morning. Blocked: Users with overdue recalled books will have their accounts blocked by the system. Their accounts will remain blocked until the book is returned. The system will not permit staff members to override blocks or to renew books that have been recalled. The only way to remove a block from an account is to return the materials. Barred: Users can be barred from using library materials for a number of reasons, the most common being that they have been billed for lost items. They can also be barred if they resign from the university, if their classes are purged, or for flagrant violations of library policy. Based on Joseph Sabin's landmark bibliography (Bibliotheca Americana: A Dictionary of Books Relating to America from Its Discovery to the Present Time), this collection contains works about the Americas published throughout the world from 1500 to the early 1900's. The Archives of Sexuality and Gender program provides a robust and significant collection of primary sources for the historical study of sex, sexuality, and gender.
