Chaffe record books, 1887-1895. 3 ms. vols. Location: H:23. John Chaffe & Sons, a cotton and sugar trading concern in New Orleans, was succeeded by Wm. H. Chaffe & Co., Limited. Wm. H. & J. C. Chaffe's Shingle Mill was a manufacturer of cypress shingles and lumber in Eugenia Louisiana. Collection includes a cotton market report book (1887-1893), an order book (1894-1895), and daily report forms (1893), respectively, for the three Chaffe businesses. Chambers practiced dentistry in various places, including Yazoo County, Mississippi, and Madison Parish, Louisiana. Six diaries cover the period 1849-1863 and describe Chambers's activities in North St. Louis, New Orleans, Panama City, Yazoo County, Mississippi, and Madison Parish, Louisiana. The diary from 1862-1863 describes experiences in Vicksburg and includes an account of the siege of Vicksburg. Collection also includes a diary of Augustus Lattz of the 76th Illinois Regiment. Allen served in the 4th Louisiana Regiment during the Civil War and was Confederate governor of Louisiana in 1864. Letter from Allen to William F. Lockwood, keeper of machinery of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, authorizes Lockwood to loan penitentiary looms to cotton planters in eastern Louisiana and includes instructions for loaning the looms. Holographic poems, most signed and dated by Butler and most written at Lake Jackson, Tallahassee, Florida. Many of the poems were adapted to the music of contemporary songs and hymns. One group of poems comments on the 1845 presidential election of James K. Polk and George M. Dallas and eulogizes Andrew Jackson. A promissory note (1831) is for the hire of three slaves. Emigration agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, a founder of Jennings, Louisiana, and 'father' of the southwestern Louisiana rice industry. Cary actively solicited Iowa farmers to emigrate to southwestern Louisiana. Newspaper clippings concerning Cary genealogy, rice and fruit tree cultivation, the development of Jennings and southwestern Louisiana, Holstein cattle, farming associations and fairs, national financial issues, and the Southern Pacific Railroad Company.
