Lawyer of New Orleans who served as chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court. He married Caroline Thomas of Cottage Hall Plantation, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. Letters (1830-1838) from Merrick to his mother, Ann Merrick, and his brother, William Winston Merrick record Merrick's activities as a prep student in Wilbraham, Mass., and his law studies and early legal career in Ohio. Description
Hyams, Henry M. (Henry Michael), 1806-1875. Family Papers, 1843-1953 (bulk 1901-1955). 313 items, 7 printed vols. Location: E:55. Available on microfilm 5750: University Publications of America Southern Women and Their Families in the 19th Century: Papers and Diaries Series E, Reels 13-14. Lawyer, state senator, and lieutenant governor of Louisiana. In the 1830s he was a member of a vigilante committee to oppose anti-slavery interests. His son, Henry Hyams, Jr., was a lawyer in New Orleans as was his daughter, Judith Hyams Douglas. Papers consist of letters pertaining to the political situation in Grant Parish, Louisiana, in 1873 and the causes of the Colfax riot. Included are land patents and plats issued in Carroll, St. Landry, and Caldwell parishes, Louisiana, and in Texas. Papers of Henry M. Hyams, Jr. relate to his work for the Court of Commissioners of Alabama Claims and family lawsuits which concerned litigation and recovery of Hyams' lands principally by Judith. Miles Terrell, a cotton farmer of Rapides Parish, La., and his wife, Sarah Clifton Terrell were free people of color. Papers include bills, registration certificates for voting, receipts for payments on notes, subpoenas in civil cases for failure to pay debts, and tax receipts of Miles Terrell (1859-1879). Martin, Robert Campbell, b. 1839. Papers, 1767-1932. 241 items, 75 vols. (68 ms. Vols., 8 printed vols.). Location: C:9, OS:M, O:18-19, 98. Sugar planter of Albemarle Plantation, Assumption Parish, Louisiana, and son of Robert Campbell Martin and Mary Winfred Pugh. Martin served as first lieutenant in the 26th Louisiana Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. Papers include Pugh family property and estate records such as deeds and leases, an estate inventory, powers of attorney, and a promissory note. Other papers include a funeral notice, marriage license, muster roll, receipts, and voter registration form. Also included are record books of Albemarle Plantation, memorandum books, newspaper clippings, and printed items. Strong, George C., 1832-1863. Photograph Album, 1857, 1891. 1 volume. Location: F:6. A native of Vermont and West Point graduate, Strong joined Benjamin F. Butler's staff as adjutant in 1861, actively took part in planning the Union expedition against New Orleans, and eventually became Butler's chief of staff. Ellis, Ezekiel Park, 1807-1884. Family Papers, 1812-1914 (bulk 1839-1866). 180 items; 5 printed. Vols. Location: U:66. Resident of Amite, Louisiana, judge, and a member of the Louisiana legislature. His sons, all lawyers, attended Centenary College in Jackson, Louisiana, and served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Correspondence includes letters to Ellis' wife during travel to court houses in the Florida parishes, and letters from his sons at college and law school (1850s). The bulk of the correspondence consists of Civil War letters from Ellis' sons. The collection includes typescripts of a few slave bills of sale, invitations, certificates, newspaper clippings, and memoranda. Printed volumes include catalogs of Centenary College.
