Vinet, John B. (John Baptiste), b. 1835. Papers, 1861-1900. .16 linear ft. (37 items, 3 ms. vols., 3 printed vols.) Location: A:69, OS:V. Confederate officer in the Orleans Artillery Battalion in the Civil War and later Chief of Ordnance, Louisiana State National Guard (1889-1896). Papers include Civil War dispatches, field orders, vouchers, passes and correspondence. A notebook (1861) kept by a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, physician contains remedies for illness, some in French. Two case records books of Vinet deal with the 1878 yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans and document relief administered by the Howard Association. Some notebook entries in French. Wall, John Q. Letter, 1862. 1 item. Location: Misc:W. Available on microfilm 5735: University Publications of America Confederate Military Manuscripts Series B, Reel 21. Confederate soldier in the Civil War. Wall enlisted as a private in the Pointe Coupee Artillery Battalion (September 1861) in Columbus, Kentucky. He was exchanged as a prisoner of war in November 1862. Wall's letter to his sister, Mrs. Pauline R. Witt, Josiah C. Letter to Mr. E. W. Witt, 1863 March 3-7. 1 item. Location: Misc:W. Union soldier in the 42nd Massachusetts Infantry in the Civil War. Witt's letter to his family describes his unit's activities at New Orleans, camp news, the lack of provisions for Confederate forces, the poor condition of prisoners taken at Galveston, and the surrender of Confederate officers. The letter also describes the lack of resistance to gun boats passing forts on the Mississippi River and the seizure and destruction of cotton along the river. Tichenor, George H., 1837-1923. Diaries, 1861-1917 (bulk 1861-1863). 2 items; 3 v. Location: H:20, Misc:T, OS:T. Kentucky native served in the Confederate Army. Wounded in battle near Memphis, Tennessee, he is said to have developed an antiseptic formula as a result of experiments on himself. Diaries illustrate daily events; lack of provisions; and battle engagements in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky. They also document sentiments concerning conscription and Union troops deserting to the Confederacy.
