Planter of Elmsley Plantation, Woodville, Wilkinson County, Mississippi. His son, St. John Richardson Liddell, was a planter of Llanada Plantation near Trinity, Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, and a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War. Papers consist of plantation records, slave lists, personal correspondence, business and legal papers, account books, notebooks, and plantation diaries. Manuscript volumes consist of cashbooks, bank books, cotton and lumber record books, plantation notebooks, and an incomplete manuscript of LIDDELL'S RECORD OF THE CIVIL WAR IN AMERICA 1860-1866. Cotton planter of Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. He was appointed as tax collector of that parish in 1873. Earliest documents include family letters from Maryland, receipts for the burial of slaves, bank drafts, and tax receipts. Included is a Confederate tax estimate and assessment of agricultural products (1863) and Gardiner's appointment as tax collector. Reconstruction broadsides include an announcement concerning special taxes upon all professionals, trades, and stores, letters concerning Governor William Pitt Kellogg, and an address to African American voters. Little writes from the federal steamer Northerner of the Mississippi Squadron. He tells of military and naval operations on the Yazoo River just above Vicksburg. He describes life in camp near Vicksburg, remarking on the increase in small pox deaths, and that sick soldiers needed to be sent to St. Louis Little notes that many of the men "would like to throw down their guns and go home."
