During the Civil War he was a member of the 15th Arkansas Infantry. Notebook of Simmons contains personal accounts, lists of students, and lists of marriages. Included in the collection is an article written by Simmons about his activities in the Civil War, and a letter from Camp Holaway Ferry to his grandfather.
