Hyams, Henry M. (Henry Michael), 1806-1875. Family Papers, 1843-1953 (bulk 1901-1955). 313 items, 7 printed vols. Location: E:55. Available on microfilm 5750: University Publications of America Southern Women and Their Families in the 19th Century: Papers and Diaries Series E, Reels 13-14. Lawyer, state senator, and lieutenant governor of Louisiana. In the 1830s he was a member of a vigilante committee to oppose anti-slavery interests. His son, Henry Hyams, Jr., was a lawyer in New Orleans as was his daughter, Judith Hyams Douglas. Papers consist of letters pertaining to the political situation in Grant Parish, Louisiana, in 1873 and the causes of the Colfax riot. Included are land patents and plats issued in Carroll, St. Landry, and Caldwell parishes, Louisiana, and in Texas. Papers of Henry M. Hyams, Jr. relate to his work for the Court of Commissioners of Alabama Claims and family lawsuits which concerned litigation and recovery of Hyams' lands principally by Judith. Letters (1830-1838) from Merrick to his mother, Ann Merrick, and his brother, William Winston Merrick record Merrick's activities as a prep student in Wilbraham, Mass., and his law studies and early legal career in Ohio. Actors and Musicians Photographs, ca. 1880-1920. 64 items. Location: E:71. The collection consists of mounted and unmounted black and white photographs of actors and musicians who appeared at New Orleans theaters during the period of 1880-1920. Handwritten notes on the back of many of the photos identify the individuals, the theater where they appeared, and the name of the play or event. Among the New Orleans houses so identified are the Tulane, Athenaeum, Orpheum, Dauphine, and Crescent Theaters, as well as the French Opera House. For further information, see online catalog. Cotton planters of Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, and proprietors of Clinton Brick and Tile Company and the East Louisiana Land Investment Company. Letters (1861-1863) from Granville L. Alspaugh to his mother describe his service in the Confederate Army at Vicksburg. Papers (1851-1893) also reflect social, personal, and business matters, including the sale of cotton through factors in New Orleans. Letters of Robert Granville Knox (1890-1899) describe student life at Louisiana State University, his partnership in a drugstore in Hammond, La., and his participation in the Spanish American War, with Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Later correspondence (1900-1921) include letters written to Miss Elise Walker by soldiers during World War I.
