Family correspondence of the Kent and Amacker families of St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes, La., including financial records and miscellaneous items. Bulk of correspondence written or received by the Kent Family during the Civil War and relates to military operations in southeastern Louisiana, family participation in campaigns in Georgia, presence of Federals, and the imprisonment of James Fluker Kent at Johnson Island, Ohio. Description
Burrwood, Louisiana, and Southwest Pass jetties construction photographs, circa 1905-1915. 18 photographic prints. Location: E:65. Between 1898 and 1913, work was conducted to create a sustainable channel 1,000 feet wide and 35 feet deep at the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River delta. Surveying, dredging, and construction of jetties, sills, and other structures took place during this period. Fourteen of eighteen annotated photographic prints document construction of jetties in the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River delta, while three concern the aftermath of the 1915 hurricane and one presents a view of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The Brownell Land Company was the 21st century legacy of the numerous business ventures of the Brownell family in Louisiana beginning in 1880, including Berwick Lumber Company, Brownell Drews Lumber Company, Brownell Kidd Company, and People’s Ice and Cold Storage. The records document the everyday business transactions of the Brownell family’s businesses and the mark left by their businesses on the Louisiana coast and terrain in St. Martin, Assumption, St. Mary, Iberia, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, and Terrebonne Parishes. Records include financial records, such as taxes, journals, ledgers, cash books, and annual reports; land records including deeds, leases, sales, and titles; lumber records including tallies from the mill and tallies from what is pulled from the land and water; administrative and legal records such as correspondence, court cases, and meeting minutes; and employee records. West, William Hansberry. Document, circa 1945-1955..1 item [photostat]. Location: Misc.:W. Notarized document signed by William Hansberry West's daughter, Lydia Ann West, aged 83. In it she testifies that her father was the pilot of the steamboat Robert E. Lee during its much-publicized race with the steamboat Natchez from St. Louis, Mo., to New Orleans, La., in 1870. The document includes a photograph of a medal presented in 1871 in New Orleans, La., to West by "Daily" Roper (possibly Daniel J.
