His family lived in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Letters exchanged by Latta and his wife during his service in Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, and Mississippi. Latta describes his participation in the battles of Belmont and Shiloh. Included are three letters from a brother living in Boston, Massachusetts, and two letters from a school teacher.
