#SubjectLibrarianSaturday is a social media and blog series highlighting LSU Libraries’ subject librarians, whose job is to help students and faculty with their research at any stage.
Jazzlynn Boyd is LSU Libraries’ liaison to the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Physics & Astronomy. The responses below have been edited for length and clarity.
What inspired you to become a librarian, and how did you become involved in your current field of expertise?
I foolishly believed, like so many people, that being a librarian was just about reading books and restocking shelves. But as I got into the field, I found out it’s about disseminating information in fun, creative, and ethical ways! Once I realized this, I decided I wanted to help empower people because information is power.
How do you approach research consultations to ensure patrons feel comfortable and supported?
I try to ensure that patrons get the sense that their research, and the consultation itself, is a process and that sometimes it can be frustrating. Even professionals have moments when they hit walls and get frustrated.
What do you enjoy most about helping patrons with their research and information needs?
I think most educators say this but I enjoy the "Aha!" moment when the patron starts to understand. I love seeing it in their eyes.
Can you share a memorable experience or success story from assisting a patron with their research project?
One moment that stood out to me was when an instructor emailed me her students’ feedback from an instruction that I did. Their enthusiasm in hearing what I had to say just really warmed my heart.
Outside of your work as a librarian, what are some of your interests or hobbies?
Despite my lively personality, I'm a diehard introvert. I love playing video games, reading, watching junk TV, and (whispers) researching.
How do you stay current with developments and trends in your field to better assist patrons with their research needs?
The best way I stay up to date, and in any field, is to read, have conversations with those who are active in that community, and remain diligent in pursuing information.
Contact a subject librarian to book a research consultation and become familiar with the most frequently used library databases and information sources in your specific area of study.
The LSU Libraries includes the LSU Library and the adjacent Hill Memorial Library. Together, the libraries contain more than 4 million volumes and provide additional resources such as expert staff, technology, services, electronic resources, and facilities that advance research, teaching, and learning across every discipline.
