Our Lady of the Lake, "Under Pressure: A Louisiana Hospital's COVID-19 Experience"
Description
The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped daily life, placing immense strain on healthcare workers, families and communities. At Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, administrators, physicians, nurses, researchers and frontline staff faced profound uncertainty—adapting in real time while continuing to care for patients and support one another. To ensure these experiences are preserved for future generations, Our Lady of the Lake partnered with LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication and LSU Libraries to create Under Pressure: A Louisiana Hospital’s COVID-19 Experience–an oral history project documenting the challenges, innovations and resilience of those on the front lines. Doctors, nurses, and administrators on staff at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and LSU researchers discuss a variety of topics, including day-to-day operations in a rapidly changing environment, difficulty communicating information to the public, patient care and treatment amid changing protocols, risks to healthcare workers, rewarding experiences interacting with patients’ family members who were subject to visitation restrictions, equipment shortages, fear and uncertainty in the early days of the pandemic, coping with, misinformation regarding vaccines, and working with an Army disaster medical assistance team.
