What: “Finding your Roots in Chronicling America”

The project manager of the Digitizing Louisiana Newspapers Project (DLNP) Laura Charney will be at the Bluebonnet Branch Library at 6:30 p.m. on May 31, 2012, to deliver the presentation “Finding Your Roots in Chronicling America.” The presentation will demonstrate how to create dynamic keyword searches using Chronicling America’s interface, discuss the highlights and pitfalls of using historical newspapers as resources in genealogical research, and answer questions about DLNP newspapers.  All are welcome to join us for this free event.

Since 2009 LSU Libraries Special Collections has participated in the National Digital Newspaper Program funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Digitizing Louisiana Newspapers Project has digitized and made available through the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America website over 110,000 pages of historical Louisiana newspapers.

The Chronicling America site is a free, full-text searchable website featuring over 4.8 million pages of historic newspapers published between 1836-1922 from 25 states and the District of Columbia. Louisiana is presently represented by 56 newspaper titles from around the state. An additional 110,000 pages of Louisiana newspapers from 29 new titles will be added by October 2013.
