The LSU Libraries and the LSU Chemistry Department have partnered with the American Chemical Society (ACS) to bring a free series of seminars to the LSU campus. The seminars are for students in any field of science who are interested in learning about career paths, finding a job, getting published as a scientist, and honing their research skills using SciFinder®. The seminars will be held on Friday, November 16, in the Rotunda and Woods Auditorium of the Energy, Coast and Environment Building on the LSU campus. Attendance is not limited to LSU students, but open to science students from all area colleges and universities. The events kick off with an informal "Science Café" for students and faculty, Thursday evening, from 6 to 8 pm, at Restaurant IPO in downtown Baton Rouge. There will be free food and drink. This networking event will include a panel discussion on "Alternative Careers in Science."

Seminars on Friday morning, November 16, include sessions on "The Basics in Scholarly Publishing" and "Copyright Ethics in Scholarly Communication," presented by John Finley, Associate Editor of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, and Matt Hotze, ACS Managing Editor. Vanessa Storan will present a session on using SciFinder®, a research discovery tool for literature in biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and others.

Afternoon attendees will learn about the four main career pathways in the sciences: academic, industry, government, and entrepreneurial careers, and how to choose the right career path. Geared for graduate students and recent grads, it will also be useful for experienced professionals considering a career change. The session will help attendees inventory their own values, interests, background, strengths, and weaknesses, to help them select an appropriate career pathway. It will also cover the job market and hiring trends.
