At noon, on Friday, February 14th, at the Hill Memorial Library Lecture Hall, Professor Ray Diamond of the LSU Law School will moderate a discussion of the Emmy Award-winning film The Loving Story, which documents the story of the famous civil rights Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S. 1 (1967).  This is the next event in the LSU Libraries’ Created Equal Film Series.

In 1958, Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter were married in Washington, DC.  After returning to Virginia, they were arrested in the middle of the night for that state’s “crime of miscegenation”—or interracial marriage.  The Loving Story  tells the story of the couple’s fight to live as man and wife in the state where they had family, friends, and economic ties.  Clips from the film will be shown, and the discussion will emphasize how important social change can be effected through our judicial system.

While this event will feature film clips to spur discussion, the film will be shown in its entirety at Baton Rouge Community College’s Magnolia Theater at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 13th.
