LSU Libraries' faculty member Stephen Bensman is one of the top 20 librarian authors worldwide, according to a recent study in the journal Scientometrics.  The study, "Worldwide Contributors to the Literature of Library and Information Science: Top Authors, 2007–2012," by William H. Walters and Esther Isabelle Wilder, was published online in December 2014. The article identifies "the top individual contributors to 31 LIS journals from 2007 to 2012." Out of more than 9800 authors analyzed, Bensman ranked 11th among librarians worldwide for articles in LIS journals.

Bensman is known for his work on the study of the structure of human knowledge, particularly as it pertains to the production, dissemination, evaluation, and use of information. He has published many articles about the impact factor, and his most recent work has focused on the emerging field of webology. He was awarded the 2010 Scholar Librarian of the Year Award by the Louisiana chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL).
