In recognition of Women's History Month, the LSU Libraries’ Special Collections’ next "Afternoon in the Archives" will feature a sampling of rare books and manuscripts that chronicle more than 500 years of women’s history.

The event will be held in the McIlhenny Room of Hill Memorial Library on March 31 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Visitors will have a chance to view materials related to women’s history in the Middle Ages and Renaissance; selections from the library's growing collection of books by early modern women writers; works on women in science; fashion periodicals; books by women from Louisiana; and materials documenting women’s history at LSU.

Other items on display will include papers of women’s and civil rights activist Roberta Madden; manuscripts reflecting the experiences of women in Louisiana and Mississippi from the antebellum period through Reconstruction (including northern teachers who came to the South to teach freedmen); as well as material related to the campaign for women’s suffrage.

Afternoon in the Archives is an informal series of monthly showcases designed to give you an opportunity to explore various aspects of history and culture while learning more about Special Collections’ exciting historical resources.  Stop in for a few minutes or stay for an hour.  Library staff will be on hand to talk about our collections and how they can be part of your teaching, learning, and research.
