Peggy Hoon joins Libraries as Director of Copyright Policy and Education

Hoon, Peggy (candid)Peggy Hoon has joined the LSU Libraries as Director of Copyright Policy and Education. Hoon is an accomplished copyright expert with a J.D. from the University of Washington and a B.S. in nursing from the University of Colorado. Prior working at LSU, she was the Scholarly Communications Librarian for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and before that, the Special Assistant to the Provost for Copyright Administration at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the NCSU Libraries Scholarly Communication Librarian. She worked with the Center for Intellectual Property at the University of Maryland University College for many years and was their Intellectual Property Scholar from 2011-2013.

A nationally recognized authority and speaker on copyright, scholarly communication, and licensing, Hoon was the Association of Research Libraries’ first Visiting Scholar for Campus Copyright and Intellectual Property, and as such, she headed the “Know Your Copy Rights” initiative. She received the 2008 L. Ray Patterson Award in Support of Users’ Rights from the American Library Association (ALA), authored the TEACH Act Toolkit, and was the Intellectual Consultant for the Grateful Dead Online Archives at the University of California at Santa Cruz. She has given hundreds of talks and workshops across the country.

Hoon is looking forward to working with LSU faculty, staff, and students on the copyright use and ownership issues that invariably accompany the preparation of teaching and research materials.  She is also available to assist faculty with understanding their publication agreements and the rights they need to retain in order to use their works in future teaching and research endeavors.  Additionally, she is excited to work with LSU’s fantastic librarians and library resources, all inextricably entwined with copyright and licensing issues.  With the creation of this new and innovative position, Hoon is looking forward to the many opportunities available to work with and assist the library, the campus, and the community it serves in finding and exercising their many rights and privileges under the copyright law.

The daughter of an Air Force pilot, Hoon is from everywhere and nowhere. Although she has lived and traveled all over the world, she is new to both Baton Rouge and Louisiana.  Having heard so many wonderful and colorful stories about the area’s culture and activities, she is calling her move to Baton Rouge her “last big adventure!”

The LSU Libraries includes the LSU Library and the adjacent Hill Memorial Library. Together, the libraries contain more than 4 million volumes and provide additional resources such as expert staff, technology, services, electronic resources, and facilities that advance research, teaching, and learning across every discipline.
