From 0 to 60: Kickstarting Digital Scholarship in the Southeast

The Alabama Digital Humanities Center was started less than five years ago, and in that time has launched more than 60 projects. In this talk, Dr. Wilson will explore a range of these projects, from pedagogical initiatives empowering students as knowledge creators, to large-scale research initiatives including text mining, making digital critical editions, and network mapping. This presentation will share some best practices, effective methods, and potential new directions for using digital humanities approaches in teaching and research.
Planning and Running Successful Digital Scholarship Projects

In this hands-on workshop, Dr. Wilson will guide participants through the planning of a digital scholarship project. Successful planning must take into account the varied needs and perspectives of the people involved, including faculty members, graduate students, librarians, metadata experts, IT specialists, end users, and administrative stakeholders. How can a project plan incorporate and balance the needs and perspectives of each group? Who should be involved, when, how, and why? How can the expertise and input from everyone working on the project be coordinated? The session will work through these considerations for a simulated digital project, creating a full-scale implementation plan. The session will include reviewing some useful software to assist with coordinating this kind of collaborative scholarship.
