On August 25, 2016, the National Park Service will celebrate its 100th birthday!

As a Regional Federal Depository Library, the LSU Libraries contains many publications from the National Park Service. Some of these publications are on display in Middleton Library’s lobby through the end of 2016.

Visitors are invited to take a moment to share a positive National Park experience or to share which parks they would like to visit if they could. The display includes a complete list of National Parks and a drop box for comments.

Below are some of the responses we got.

“A group of peers traveled to Guadalupe Peak Texas. The highest peak in Texas. We organized impressive team work to pull off the trip including food, shelter, and driving.”

“When my family went on vacation in 1972, we visited two National Parks. First, we went to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. After touring the caverns, we stayed to watch the bat show. Every evening, all the bats who lived there would fly out of the cave at a certain place, so the park service had built an amphitheater there so that visitors could sit and watch the bats fly out.”

“I went to the Grand Canyon last summer with my family and it was hardly the best experience. I learned a lot of the history and geology…”

“Over the summer, I visited Denali National Park with my sister…We went to sleep under heavy clouds after days of overcast skies. But when we unzipped our tent the next morning, we were greeted by a clear view of the massive mountain. It was incredible!”

“I visited the San Antonio Missions regularly. These missions are so lonely and well preserved.”

“One of my favorite national park memories happened in February 2016 at Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.”
