LSU Libraries is celebrating Media Literacy Week from Nov. 5-9. The purpose of Media Literacy Week is to raise awareness of the importance and power of media literacy education and its essential role in education today. There will be events held in Middleton Library all week.
Throughout the week, two games will be available in the lobby of Middleton Library. The Buffalo Name Dropping game is an "Apples-to-Apples" type of game that requires participants to name people who fit given descriptions. The Factitious game asks participants to read snippets of news stories and determine if they're real or fake.
Each day, there will be a question pertaining to some aspect of Media Literacy Week for students to answer. The following day, answers and explanations from librarians will be displayed.
There will be a film screening of "The Problem with Apu", followed by a panel discussion in Hill Memorial Library on Wednesday, Nov. 7. “The Problem with Apu,” a feature length comedic documentary from truTV, was created by and stars comedian Hari Kondabolu as he examines the East Indian convenience store owner, Apu, on the long-running TV series, “The Simpsons.” truTv, part of Turner, a WarnerMedia company, is the home for original, creator-driven comedy series with a distinct point of view.
On Thursday, Nov. 8, there will be a workshop for graduate students titled, "Teaching News Literacy Skills: for Graduate Students Who Teach Undergraduates" in Middleton Library. This will be an interactive workshop led by librarians who teach information literacy. They will discuss the role that news literacy can have in teaching, as well as include activities and handouts that can be adapted for the classroom.
"Media literacy skills are vital to living and learning in the 21st century," the National Association for Media Literacy Education says, "As the speed and quantity of information grow exponentially, we need to critically think about the role media play in our lives, our society, and our world."
