Hayley Johnson, LSU Libraries Head of Government Documents and Microforms, has been awarded the 2019 NewsBank/Readex/GODORT/ALA Catharine J. Reynolds Research Grant and is one of the recipients of the 2019 Margaret T. Lane/Virginia F. Saunders Memorial Research Award for the book Government Information Essentials (ALA 2018).
The research grant provides funding for research in the field of documents librarianship, or in a related area that would benefit the individual’s performance as a documents librarian or make a contribution to the field, according to the ALA website. The grant will support Johnson’s research in examining the United States military service of Navajo Code Talkers and Japanese Americans during World War II.
The award Johnson received, with her co-authors, for Government Information Essentials is given annually to an author or shared among collaborative authors of an outstanding research article in which government documents, either published or archival in nature, form a substantial part of the documented research, according to ALA. Johnson shares this award with 16 other authors who contributed to the book. ALA states on its website that The Awards Committee particularly notes the contribution the publication makes to the library and information science field of government information librarianship.
