LSU Libraries is hosting its third annual Media Literacy Week event on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020. The event, "News Consumption and How It Impacts Our Decisions," will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Zoom. 

Do you get your news from a newspaper, your friends, professors, or social media – or somewhere else? How do you know what to trust?

How you consume news impacts not just the information you receive, but also your behaviors. It is not just you – news consumption has broader impacts on decision-making, from health to elections.

Join us for a discussion with a panel of experts as we talk about these impacts and how you can improve your media diet.

Panelists for the event include: 

Joshua Darr, an assistant professor of political communication in the Manship School of Mass Communication and the Department of Political Science at LSU. His research examines local media, campaign strategy, and political behavior.

Alison J. Head, an information scientist and social science researcher. She is the founder and director of Project Information Literacy (PIL), a research institute in the San Francisco Bay Area that studies what it is like to be a student in the digital age. Since 2009, in a series of 12 groundbreaking scholarly research studies, PIL has investigated how U.S. college students and recent graduates utilize research skills, information competencies, and strategies for completing course work, engaging with news, and solving information problems in their everyday lives and the workplace.

Kathleen Searles, an associate professor who holds a joint appointment in the Manship School of Mass Communication and the Department of Political Science at LSU.  Her interests include news media, campaign advertising, and political psychology.  She is a founding member of Women Also Know Stuff, an organization designed to amplify the voice of women political scientists in public discourse and decrease the gender imbalance in media representation of experts.

Rebecca Kelley, mass communication librarian, and Brittany O'Neill, humanities & social sciences librarian, will be the moderators.

This event is produced for Media Literacy Week, October 26-30, 2020, which is hosted by the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). Media Literacy Week calls attention to media literacy education by bringing together hundreds of partners for events and activities around the country.
