LSU Libraries has recently posted an job announcement for Head of Research and Instruction Services (Assistant or Associate Librarian) on the Louisiana State University--Careers website. This is a faculty position that reports to Lois Kuyper-Rushing, the Associate Dean for Public and Collection Services.

The incumbent will be developing a strategy for the department's support of research and instruction on the LSU campus and leading outreach to university faculty and departments in order establish partnerships throughout campus. The department, Research & Instruction Services (RIS), is located on the first floor of the main campus library and currently consists of 12 full-time faculty and one full-time staff person. They provide research, instruction, and collection development support to eight colleges across the campus. This unit is also responsible for many of the Libraries' outreach and events programs such as the annual Frankenfaire Open House and Media Literacy Week events.

Of this person’s importance to the work of the Libraries, Kuyper-Rushing, says “This individual will serve as the face of the library to the university.  They will provide vision, leadership, and creativity to Research and Instruction Services in connecting users to the information and services they need.”

The responsibilities of this position includes:

• LEADERSHIP IN RESEARCH. Fosters the development of emerging and traditional information and research services necessary to support the university’s mission of generating, preserving, disseminating, and applying knowledge and cultivating the arts. (35%)
• ADMINISTRATION, MANAGEMENT & SUPERVISION. Hires and directly supervises all departmental staff, currently including 12 librarians and 1 Coordinator, and provides indirect supervision of several student workers. (25%)
• INSTRUCTION SERVICES. Provides and directs outreach to campus partners to lead and/or support campus wide instructional initiatives. (20%)
• RESEARCH AND SERVICE. Works toward tenure and promotion through research and service. (15%)
• OTHER. Assumes liaison responsibilities that include presentations to classes and consultations with students and researchers within the assigned subject areas (as needed or desired by the incumbent). (5%)

To be considered for Assistant Librarian, the incumbent must have at least:

•  ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science/Studies and 3-5 years of experience;
• Experience as a research and instruction librarian;
• Knowledge of library resources;
• Successful growth in library management and leadership;
• Demonstrated supervisory experience; and
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

To be considered for Associate Librarian, the incumbent must have at least an ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science/Studies and 5-7 years of experience, 3 years or more at the Assistant Librarian (or commensurate) level in addition to the other minimum qualifications listed above.

Preferred qualifications include:

• A master's degree and 5 or more years of experience for the Assistant Librarian level; or
• A Ph.D. and seven to ten years of experience for the Associate Librarian level; and
• Experience coordinating a library instruction program, experience with curricular development in a library context, experience working with new information technologies.
