Louisiana State Medical Society
Series Information
Description
The Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS) was founded in 1878, to advance healthcare in the state of Louisiana. In 2014, Dr. Trenton James began an oral history project to continue the heretofore written history of the LSMS, where he has served as an active member for many years. People interviewed for the project include not only physicians, but also nurses, a clinic director, a hospital CEO, a social worker, a lobbyist/director in Maternal & Child Health, the editor-in-chief of the LSMS journal, and physician spouses. Areas of focus include changes in technology and the evolution of practices in the fields of pediatric care, anesthesiology, pathology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, dialysis, cardiology, radiology, and more. Other topics include changes in medical training, costs of medical care, insurance companies, and new developments in the healthcare system over time. Narrators also discuss the intersection of politics, culture, and medicine, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the internal politics of the LSMS, the Charity Hospital System, wartime service as medical professionals, and involvement in state, national, and international organizations. In 2022, the LSMS provided funding for the Center to process the following collections, housed in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections (LLMVC).
