Audubon, John James, 1785-1851. Manuscript of Bear killing, before 1831. 1 manuscript. Location: Vault:53. John James Audubon was an American ornithologist, naturalist, hunter, and painter. "Scipio and the Bear," a short account of the manners of black bears and an episode of bear hunting, is from Audubon's "Ornithological Biography, or An Account of the Habits of the Birds of the United States of America" (Philadelphia: Judah Dobson, 1831), 1:479-82. This manuscript originally was entitled "Bear killing." Mss. 5189.
