S. attorney for the Orleans District (1805), U.S. senator from Louisiana (1813-1817, 1819-1823), and minister to France (1823-1829). Letter from Paris, France, to Joseph Gales, editor of the NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, in which he enclosed a newspaper account of an 'affray' between American and French sailors at Mahen in which a French officer and an American sailor were killed.
