The Butler family planted cotton and sugar in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, and resided at Cottage Plantation. Cottage Plantation, built throughout the years 1795 to 1859, was originally acquired by a Spanish land grant. Around 1810, this plantation and others in the West Feliciana and Terrebonne Parishes came under the ownership of Thomas Butler (1785-1847), who was a judge and a member of Congress. Following Thomas Butler's death, his family continued to operate the plantations. The Cottage Plantation records include a Spanish land grant (1795) for what later became Cottage Plantation and a deed (1915) for the sale of Cottage Plantation from Thomas Butler, et al. to Robert O. Butler, et al. English and Spanish. Mss. 5099.
