Henry Marshall was a cotton planter and a member of the Louisiana Senate. S. C. Furman, Marshall's son-in-law, was a medical doctor and officer in the Louisiana Second Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Correspondence deals with politics, economics, agriculture, and the Civil War.
