His son, John Clay MacKowen, was a physician. Correspondence consists of letters from friends and business associates, many of Irish descent, living in Louisiana, New York, and Ireland. Letters discuss personal, social, economic, and political matters. Included is a newspaper article by Dr. John MacKowen refuting the claim by Colonel Allen D.
