Diary, in two volumes, document the history of the 63rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. G, from May 1, 1863 until Dec. 31, 1864. Entries provide a daily account a soldier's life, the regiment’s march from Memphis through Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky, and engagements with Confederate troops. Recurring topics include military campaigns, weather, camp life, disease, and war news. Entries also relate to the confiscation of livestock, the availability of food, deserters on both sides, enemy infiltrators, war refugees and slaves. A letter (May 3, 1863) and a roster of the 63rd Ohio Regiment (1893) accompany the diary. Mss. 3871.
