Judith Major was a public school teacher and later professor emeritus of French at Louisiana State University. This study, conducted by Major, examines the phonetics and pronunciation of the "patois negre louisianais," a French creole spoken by African Americans in Louisiana. Major utilizes an artificial palate and documents the sounds and movements of the mouth, using diagrams and photographs, while pronouncing certain words. Mss. 5081.
