Milton, Horace P. Letters, 1863. 2 items. Location: MISC:M. Private, 47th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and clerk in the Ordnance Office, Headquarters, Department of the Gulf, in New Orleans. Letter written from an encampment at the Metairie Ridge Race Course in New Orleans, (April 15, 1863) comments in detail on regimental personnel problems and describes the cemetery tombs and the surrounding area. A letter dated May 8, 1863, describes health and weather conditions in New Orleans, the presence of large numbers of "grey-backs," and local excitement at the news of Colonel Benjamin Henry Grierson's raid through Mississippi and the reception upon his arrival in New Orleans.
