Pickels was an original member of the Louisiana Educational Publishing Co., Ltd., Board of Directors. By 1892 he had become editor and proprietor of the official journal of the Louisiana Teachers Association. Manuscript copies of poems, essays, and stories, some of which were published, reflect Pickel's creativity and philosophy.
