Arthur Hawley Scouten, a writer and scholar, attended Louisiana State University, where he received his B.A. (1935), M.A. (1938), and Ph.D. (1942) in English. During the 1930's, he worked as an assistant in the LSU Athletic Department, managing Tiger Stadium during home football games. Scouten went on to teach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1947-1980. His research interests included Shakespeare, American literature, and 18th-century British satire. Papers consist of correspondence, printed items, and photographs documenting Scouten's career. Correspondence relates primarily to his work in the academic profession. There are also several letters from Russell Long. Later letters to his son, Lee, recount his memories of Robert Penn Warren, Cleanth Brooks, and James Monroe Smith at LSU; and managing Tiger Stadium. Printed items consist of programs for professional conferences, news clippings, a 1935 voter's registration card, and several LSU football field passes from the 1930's. Photographs include a signed photo of Russell Long as a student, construction of a building at LSU in 1936, and several images of Scouten. Mss. 5049.
