The photographs were an effort by the Union military, specifically the Department of the Gulf under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, and various charitable organizations who sold the cartes-de-visite to raise money for the education of former slaves in newly established schools. Another purpose was to inspire sympathy for former slaves and to raise Northern support for the war. Mss. 5319.
