Born in New Orleans, La., Charles Tessier served as a clerk under four Spanish governors prior to the cession of Louisiana to the United States. He was subsequently appointed notary public of New Orleans. In 1812, he received the appointment of a captain of the infantry by United States President James Madison. He later served as judge of East Baton Rouge Parish from 1815 to 1845. The estate inventory consists of an inventory and appraisment written by Charles Tessier on the household items and slaves owned by James Stuart. Mss. 5134.
